Driving at Night

July 16, 2009

Driving at night is perhaps the most dangerous time for drivers to be out and about. When it is dark, we struggle to see things as clearly as we would if we had full light shining on it. So, it doesn’t matter whether you have 20/20 vision or if you can’t see a single thing, we’re all in the same boat.

Depending on what day of the week it is as well as where you live, driving late at night can be especially dangerous because of the number of people who choose to drive while intoxicated. The irony lies in the fact that people who are intoxicated often pose more of a threat to others than they do to themselves! For my last trip up to New York from North Carolina, I figured I would beat the traffic by leaving in the middle of the night around 1am. It was a Friday night/Saturday morning combination, so I was on the roadways with people who had either just left the bar scene or were on their way to the nearest party…not the best combination. I had only been on the road for a couple of hours at best when I noticed a small Toyota car with two male occupants speeding behind me. At this point, there were only three of us on the road in each of the lanes. Just slightly ahead of me and to the right was a giant tractor trailer, and quickly gaining ground to me left and just behind me was this car.

I was already doing the speed limit and decided to slow down because the roads were wet. No sooner had I slowed down in my lane to allow the speeders to pass me on the left that they then hit a patch of standing water and hydroplaned, which sent their car shooting directly across my lane where they slammed into the truck that had been beside me. Had I not exercised good judgment to slow down in my lane, I would have definitely been hit at a high rate of speed. And seeing as how I was driving in a small SUV, the impact of their car would have most definitely caused my car to flip over. I could feel my heart pounding for a couple of seconds as the scene played out before my eyes. I pulled up alongside of the car to make sure that they were ok. At this point, the poor truck driver had pulled off to the side of the road ahead- not sure what had hit his truck. The two guys promptly got out of the car and were scratching their heads and laughing. I could see that the airbags had deployed and also that they were under the influence of something.

When I relayed the story to my parents upon finally arriving at home in New York safely, they both warned me to never leave that late at night again. I didn’t need them to tell me this twice. The other thing about driving at night is that most of us are on a schedule where we reserve the nighttime for sleeping. After driving for a while, at night- you run a greater risk for falling asleep at the wheel. Regardless of when you leave to drive, make sure that you are always hyperaware of your surroundings so that you can react accordingly.

Handing Over Your Keys to Someone Else

July 16, 2009

When it comes to driving, many of us become incredibly possessive over our vehicles. For many, your car is your ‘home away from home’. It’s a place where you can blast your music, where you can eat and have private conversations with those that you care about. However, there comes a time when a lot of us will hesitantly turn our car keys over to someone else0 even for something as small as moving a car out of a driveway so that someone who is blocked in can get out. It’s a big deal!

There are also times when it is good to hand over your car keys. For example, if you have been out drinking alcohol with friends at a bar or at a restaurant or even at someone’s house, never place yourself behind the driver’s seat of your car or anyone else’s. Always opt to have someone sober drive you home or call for alternate transportation. The money that you spend in cab fare is a small price to pay for someone elses life or a sullied driving record.

There are also times when we must be cautious about when and to whom we are handing our keys to. For example, many young couples (and older couples too) who are in relationships but who aren’t married and therefore aren’t listed on each others car insurance policies- will often let one another drive their car. And most of the time, there is nothing wrong with this unless you get into an accident. The same thing goes for friends. Even if you know that your friend is a good driver with a solid reputation of driving, car accidents happen- and often they are unpredictable. Is that a chance that you are willing to take?

Another example of handing over your car keys to someone else comes when you are taking road trips- especially road trips that are long. I can remember driving up to New York a few years ago with a friend. I noticed that my friend was getting tired while they were driving. It was dark out, and I knew that the risk was too great that we would get into an accident if the person accidentally fell asleep at the wheel, so I volunteered to take over driving. The car wasn’t mine, but it was better for me (who was more alert) to drive than someone else who was falling asleep at the wheel. This brings up a good point about driving on long trips with others. Even a relatively short trip of only a couple of hours can be enough time for someone to grow groggy behind the wheel. Often times, when two people or more are driving, the motion of the car will be enough to lull one to sleep. However, if you can, as a passenger- you should try to stay awake and keep the driver engaged in conversation. As long as they are talking, they are usually awake. Additionally, if you are talking to someone who is driving, you can better gauge how they are feeling. It doesn’t take much to identify someone who is sleepy.

Knowing What to Do in an Emergency

July 16, 2009

When you have a car, you run the risk of getting into an accident at some point and not necessarily because it was your fault but because of other people who are irresponsible while they drive. In the event that you get into an accident, you should always be prepared ahead of time this way you know what to do.

If you get into an accident with another vehicle, the first thing that you want to make sure that you do is remain calm. Next, you’ll want to get out and make sure that the other drivers and occupants are ok. Depending on the severity of the accident, it may be necessary to call for an ambulance. Regardless of what the situation is, it is advisable that you alert the police as to what happened this way they can write up an accident report which you will use to submit to your insurance company.

In some cases, you’ll run into someone who is not as nice to you. When you get into an accident, there are a lot of tensions and emotions running high. You may be upset with the other person. Similarly, the other person may feel as if you were the one who is at fault for the accident. In many cases, the two parties cannot reach an agreement as to who caused the accident, and a fight may even break out. This is why it is always advisable to get the police involved. When you get the police involved, they act as a third party to the accident and are able to objectively opine as to what happened. This is also the reason why insurance companies will typically request a police report, because they know that the police will not favor one person over the other. Their job is to be as fair and as accurate in their reporting the information.

If you own a car or drive in one on a regular basis, then it is always a good idea to keep a little emergency kit of items in the event that you get into an accident or a situation that requires it. An emergency kit should always include at least one good first aid kit. Aside from this, emergency kits can include a variety of items depending on the type of driving that you do as well as the type of person that you are. For instance, in my Jeep, I keep an emergency bin of items that include some of the following: first aid kit, 2 blankets, a full change of clothes, a jacket, sweatshirt and sweatpants, umbrella, flashlight, tire pressure gauge, etc.

Remember, prevention is the best cure for all ills. Avoid getting into an accident by first being aware of your surroundings and paying attention to how others are driving. This is called being a ‘defensive driver’. Also, remaining relatively calm while driving is a key factor in avoiding accidents or at best reacting better once you are involved in one. When you are calm, you are able to think more clearly and make better decisions.

Loan-to-Value Ratio Information

July 16, 2009

As it is with most industries, the mortgage business has terminology used exclusively within the world of home loans. When securing a mortgage, especially for the first time, you may find your head buzzing with that new terminology. Does your mortgage have a fixed rate or is it an ARM (Adjustable Rate Mortgage)? If you’re taking out a second mortgage, is it a “closed end” second or a HELOC (Home Equity Line of Credit)? What is your DTI (debt to income ratio)? LTV is another acronym commonly used when discussing a loan program. Standing for Loan to Value, LTV can be defined several ways – and it has big implications for how much equity you have, and the size of a loan you can get.

Simply speaking, LTV refers to the percentage that results when the amount you owe on the loan is divided by the home’s value. Thus, if your loan is for $80,000 on a $100,000 home, your loan to value would be 80,000 divided by 100,000 or 80%. That also means that you have 20% equity in your home, or $20,000 of equity value in this scenario. Another way to think about loan-to-value is the opposite of equity. Equity is determined by subtracting the amount owed from the value of the home and would also register as a percentage when the difference is divided by the value of the home. You will find that the percentage LTV and the percentage of equity will always add up to 100%.

Cumulative Loan to Value or CLTV (sometimes referred to as “combined loan to value”) refers the total amount owed. It comes into play most often when two loans must be taken into consideration. For instance, if you are securing a first mortgage for 80% of the home’s value and a second mortgage for 15% of the home’s value, the LTV of the first is 80% and the LTV for the second is 15%, but the CLTV is 95% as the sum of both loans is equal to 95% of the home’s value. In this scenario, your equity is 5% of the home’s value.

When you apply for a loan, LTV and / or CLTV will be taken into account and will be used to determine several things depending on the mortgage program you’re using. For most programs, you’ll need a certain minimum credit score to qualify for higher loan-to-value.

The program may be available at a higher LTV if you have a higher credit score. The logic is that the higher loan-to-value, the more risky the loan is for your lender. The lender may also determine the need for personal mortgage insurance based on the LTV, requiring it for greater loan-to-value ratio and waiving it for lower percentages.

You’ll want to be aware of the percentage LTV on your loan and know the implications associated with it. Based on the LTV, some lenders may give you a better deal than others. This will help you be an educated consumer and choose, with the help of a loan officer, exactly the right program for you.

Lil Wayne: Career History

July 16, 2009

On September 27, 1982, Dwayne Michael Carter Jr. was born in New Orleans, Louisiana. He spent his early years growing up in the tough Hollygrove district. He started rapping at a very young age at local block parties, where he was heard by a group signed by Cash Money Records.

Cash Money’s CEO, Brian “Baby” Williams and Ronald “Slim” Williams was giving Wayne some consideration. After Wayne learned the phone number and location of their office, he practically haunted them day and night. He would even leave daily rap messages on their answering machine. They were so impressed with the 12 year olds dedication they decided to give in and sign him, pairing him up with another young rapper, Big Goochie, who they had also just signed.

The duo released an album, “True Story” under the “The B.G.’s” and right from day one his style was a true gangsta rap. He was unlike most young rappers who usually start off with “bubble gum rap,” and do not make the change over until they are well out of their teen years.

Wayne’s mother became worried about her son’s actions and the company he kept when he began wearing gang affiliation clothing. Knowing the street reputation the Williams brothers had, she decided it was best to remove Lil Wayne from the Cash Money Company. In retaliation, he ran away from home for a week and during that time managed to convince his Mom that the records company owners were not to blame for any of his actions or choices.

In 1995, he along with B.G., and two other young rappers, Young Turk and Juvenile, formed the group Hot Boys. The first album, “Get it How you Live” in 1997 was followed up with “Guerilla Warfare” in 1999, shortly before his first solo effort. Wayne’s first solo album was a great success; “Tha Block is Hot” (title track) became a top ten hit.

The second album, “Lights Out” and the third,”500 Degreez”, did not fair as well and lead him to take a brief break from solo efforts to collaborate with others. Also, by this time he was the last of the Hot Boys; the others having gone their own way and retreating from what seemed to be a failing record company.

During the early 2000’s, Lil Wayne was a prolific contributor to others rap lyrics and made numerous guest appearances on other rapper’s recordings. At this time, he also made several mix tapes that received critical acclaim within the music industry. He even offered a few mixes online for free. In 2004 he released a new album, “Tha Carter” which introduced the public to a more defined and crisper performance from the young rapper. The single, “Go D.J.”, hit the top 20, and the album, the top five. In December 2005, he released “Tha Carter II”, which arrived on the charts at number two and produced a hit single, “Fireman.”

“Tha Carter III” was released in June 2008 and sold one million copies within the first week, and another million within the month. Two big hit singles from this album were “Lollipop” and “A Milli.”

Wayne’s style has become refined and improves as time progresses and with his talent for writing lyrics, record sales for him come with great ease. If his work is followed, and especially from such a young age, it may be easy to agree with his self proclaimed statement, that he is “the best rapper alive.”

What is the Definition of Computer Software?

July 16, 2009

The term “software” is not a recently conceived of word. In his 1935 essay, ‘Computable Numbers with an Application to the Entscheidungs Problem,’ Alan Turing first proposed and provided the foundation for most modern software. In 1958, the first use of the term software was used by John W. Tukey in an article in American Mathematical Monthly.

Today, the the term ‘computer software’ means written programs, rules, or codes, along with related documentation regarding the operation of a computer system that is stored in read/write memory. The “soft” part of software refers to the many products and technologies developed using different methods such as programming languages and scripting languages. The term ‘software’ is broader and can include different types of devices such as the operation systems of modern consumer devices such as automobiles, televisions, toasters, etc.

Computer software is the job descriptions of what a computer can perform. It cannot be physically touched. For instance, most computers come with software already installed. Software is also available on CD where the user inserts the disk into the hard drive and follows the installation instructions. As well, downloadable software is available on internet sites such as Microsoft. Computer software is basically a series of instructions that tells a computer how to do a particular job. For example, Microsoft Word is an example of computer software. As well, web page technologies such as HTML, PHP, ASP.NET, and XML are examples of computer software.

Computer software can be divided into two main categories: operating system software and application software.

Operating System (0/S): This system consists of the basic functions that computers perform. An example would be showing movement on a screen such as a mouse cursor was the user moves the mouse. Examples of operating systems include: windows vista, windows xp, Mac, Linux and Unix.

Application Software: These are applications that allow the computer to perform the job. Application software is used to accomplish precise tasks other than just running the computer system. This can include voice, play or record music, view videos, play video games–etc. Other examples of application software include permitting access to the internet and printing documents. Application software is the software that indirectly interacts with the computer.

System Software is the software that can directly interact with computer hardware. Examples include motherboard, CPU, keyboard, Mouse, printer–etc. System software is responsible for controlling, integrating, and managing the individual hardware components of a computer system.

Computer software is composed of machine language which is essentially groups of binary code giving processor instructions that are specific to an individual processor. It is normally written in high-level programming languages and then interpreted into machine language code. Software can also be written in assembly language which is a mnemonic representation of a machine language using a natural language alphabet.

The term computer software evolved from computational theories and formulas from pioneers in mathematics. It is easy to see how quickly technology evolved to the amazing and complex computations we see today.

Thai Buddhism - Thailand Buddhism in Present Day Part 2

July 16, 2009

The influences of Buddhism can be seen in all aspects of the Thai life and culture. In the home, people keep for worship the Buddha images of various sizes on small altar-tables. While travelling, they wear small Buddha images around their necks as objects of veneration and recollection or as amulets for adornment and protection. When passing sacred places like the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha, devout Buddhists never fail to pay respect to them. Many times during the year they hold and attend festivals at a monastery. Occasionally they go on a pilgrimage to some favourite shrines located in a remote place. Monastery buildings such as the Uposatha hall and the repository of Buddha images are usually the most beautiful and ornate buildings in the village. The Buddha’s teachings and Buddhist literature such as the Jataka tales have inspired Thai literature and most of the Thai art forms, especially mural paintings which cover the interior walls of most temples. Pali and Sanskrit are recognized as classical languages. A large number of Thai words, especially those used in royal language and writ-ten language are derived from Pali and Sanskrit. Scholars writing textbooks usually turn to Pali and Sanskrit roots for modern technical vocabulary.

BUDDHISM AS LIVED AND CHERISHED
BY THE THAI PEOPLE
In former days, when Thai men were young, they served as temple boys in the monasteries and were given instruction in reading, writing and simple arithmetic as well as in religion and morals. Through traditional ordination which is still observed today, they are bound to the Order by ties of experience or close relationship with the monks who are their former sons, relatives or friends. At least they live in the Buddhist environment in which they are linked with the religion by ties of custom, by attending religious rites, ceremonies and temple festivals, or by benefiting, either directly or indirectly, from some activities and spiritual influence of religious institutions. Buddhism is their national heritage, the glory of their country which they feel bound to preserve. Even those who are Buddhists merely by name benefit from, and are influenced by, Buddhism in some or other ways. Their cycle of life turns around activities directly or indirectly connected with Buddhism.

Devout Buddhists may give food offerings regularly in the morning, send money contributions to their neighbourhood monasteries, or contribute to some meritorious causes such as building an Uposatha hall elsewhere. Thai calendars usually show a special day of every week which is known as Wan Phra, or the Buddhist holy day, when the pious are often especially active in their merit-making. They may take food offerings to the monasteries or go to hear special sermons and observe additional precepts there, There are also Buddhist discussions or sermons on the radio which they can listen to, and Buddhist programs on television to watch on such days.

Some larger monasteries hold special programs on Saturday and Sunday, the official holidays of the week, so that working people may be able to benefit from their service. Many boys and girls go to attend classes at Buddhist Sunday schools which are conducted in monasteries both in Bangkok and in the provinces. The first of the Buddhist Sunday schools was founded at Mahachula Buddhist University in B.E. 2501 (1958 C.E.). The number of Buddhist Sunday schools increased rapidly during the last two decades, and 297 have been founded up to the present time.

Buddhist Monks and Monasteries in Thailand

July 16, 2009

The Buddhist brotherhood is composed of four assemblies of Buddhists, namely, monks, nuns, laymen and laywomen. Monks and nuns form the monastic section while laymen and laywomen form the lay section. The two sections follow the path of the Buddha at different levels. The monks are more devoted to spiritual development than the laymen. To minimize personal cares and worries, they shave their heads, wear only three robes and possess only a few necessary requisites. They depend on the laymen for material necessities such as food, clothing, lodging and medicine, and give them spiritual advice and guidance in return.

To maintain the moral standard of the people and to make their own life favourable to spiritual devotion, the monks keep strict discipline. Although the rules are very strict, the monkhood is not separated from the lay world because the monasteries are always open to anyone who wants to retire there, either permanently or temporarily. In Thailand it is even a custom for every young man to stay for a time, long or short, in the monastery and acquire a religious training. The present King himself entered the monastery, had his head shaved and lived by alms like the other monks. This tradition is a factor which leads to the stability of Thai Buddhism and the continuing increase in monks and monasteries. Thailand’s area of 200,000 square miles is thus dotted with 28,196 Buddhist monasteries where 339,648 monks and novices live.1 Travellers from foreign countries have been so impressed by these large numbers of monks and monasteries that they often call Thailand the Land of the Yellow Robe.

Monks form the Sangha, the third principle of Buddhism; the others being the Buddha, the Enlightened One, and the Dharma, his teachings. The monks follow the three main virtues of the Buddha: wisdom, purity and compassion. Compassion is interpreted as social responsibility. Through this virtue and through mutual dependence for material and spiritual life, the monks and the laymen have been in close relationship since the beginning, and the monasteries have been centres of spiritual and social life of the people throughout the history of the Thai nation.

Today social roles of the monks are more obvious in the rural life of the villages than in the urban life of the capital, towns and cities. It is usually the villagers themselves who build the monastery for their own community. They feel themselves belonging to the monastery and the monastery belonging to their community. The village monastery serves as the centre of social life and activities of the village, for village social life follows the Buddhist holy days, temple fairs and merit-making ceremonies. The villagers also feel very close to monks in the local monastery as the monks are in daily contacts with them and are con-stantly drawn into their problems, both secular and spiritual.

When a villager is in distress, when he has a dispute with his neighbour, when he seeks counsel or when he simply wants to learn, he turns to the monastery and the monks. Boys too difficult to handle at home are taken in and orphans are cared for. The temple grounds are usually the most natural location for a movie to be shown, for a lecture to be given and for polling booths to be set up for a political election. Some branches of learning have been preserved and continued in the monastery, such as architecture, sculpture, painting, carving, carpentry, and tile, brick and cement making. The monks may offer basic technical advice on these matters and offer help in organizing building programs such as well, dam, road and bridge building. Many social problems would have been pressing upon the people in the rural society due to the lack of schools, medical facilities, a police and court system, social welfare and community services, if they were not checked by these social roles of the monks and monasteries.

Buddhist Monks and Monasteries in Thailand Part 2

July 16, 2009

Today, although the spread of the government system of education has brought modern schools to replace the traditional schools, and though fewer monks teach in schools of the new system, most of the public and government schools are still housed in monastery buildings or located in the compounds of monasteries. The abbot is still the spiritual leader of the community in whom the people put full trust and to whom they give hearty cooperation in all activities, both religious and secular. For the people it is still an honour and a means of gaining merit to do such a thing as feed the monks or give them other necessities of life. Usually each morning the monks still leave the monastery for the morning alms-round. In the monastery, there is also a special hall where the people can make merit by offering their gifts of food, by listening to regular sermons and by performing other meritorious actions.

The condition of the monastery always reflects the economy of the community. Monasteries in the provinces are therefore often small, while those located in great cities, especially in Bangkok, are quite large. In larger monasteries there are many structures for the use of monks and sacred buildings containing Buddha statues, images and other objects of worship. An average or typical monastery contains at least two types of buildings: living quarters for monks, or dormitories, and an Uposatha hall in which the monks perform ecclesiastical acts and ceremonies. In addition to these, there may be many other buildings such as a Viharn or repository of Buddha images, some types of stupas called Chedi or Prang, a bell tower or belfry, a square building for the Buddha’s footprint, a scriptural library, a museum, a preaching and merit-making hall, a crematorium and buildings for religious studies and those for a public school.

There are usually a number of novices living with the monks in every monastery. In some monasteries there may also be a number of white-robed female devotees living in a separate section of the monastery. The numbers of monks and novices are not the same in all monasteries. In larger monasteries the numbers range from 100 to 600, but in smaller ones, especially in the far provinces, there are very few, usually fewer than ten. There may even be only one monk or one monk and one novice. On the average, there are about 8 monks and 4 novices .in a monastery. In the whole country, the total number of monks is 233,978 and that of novices is 105,670. Most of the younger monks are students. Elder monks work as teachers on religious and some secular subjects, as meditation-masters and practitioners, as preachers, and as ecclesiastical administrators, and sometimes as counselors of the villagers, especially on spiritual matters.

Ninety-nine percent of the novices are students under the guidance and guardianship of the monks.
Besides the monks and novices there are also a large number of temple boys or monastery boys. These boys, including many young men, live under guardianship of the monks, serving as their attendants, and use the monasteries as dormitories in which to live while attending public schools, secondary schools and universities.

There are two kinds of monasteries: the royal and the community or private ones. Royal monasteries are mostly large, having very beautiful and ornamental sacred buildings and many other artistic works. Among them are Wat Po (the Monastery of the Reclining Buddha), Wat Bencha (the Marble Monastery or, popularly called, the Marble Temple), Wat Arun (the Monastery of Dawn), Wat Srakes (the Monastery of the Golden Mount), Wat Phra Prathom Chedi (the Monastery of the First Stupa). Wat Phra Kaeo (the Chapel of the Emerald Buddha or the Chapel Royal) is also a royal Wat, but it cannot be called a monastery in the full sense of the term as it is the only Wat that has no living quarters for monks. The royal monasteries now number 186, while the number of community monasteries amounts to 28,010. By denomination, all monasteries fall under two groups, namely, Mahanikaya monasteries, numbering26,694, and Dhammayut monasteries, numbering 1,502.

Of whatever types or in whatever part of the country the monks and monasteries may be, they play important roles in the spiritual and cultural life of Thai society and have played these roles throughout her long history of more than 700 years.
